A Pet’s Prayer
by Beth Norman Harris

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more
grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand
between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me
the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must
know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting
ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated
animal, no longer used to the elements.  And I ask no greater glory than the
privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.  Though, had you no home,
I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest
pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your
devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you
were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your
bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect
you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my
health or my sight, do not turn me away from you.  Rather, hold me gently in
your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest --- and
I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest
in your hands.

                                             LIZA

Liza was a pudelpointer dog.  A black one which we were told was rare.  She had a bad start in life as she was left inside a construction site fenced in for a weekend before the work crews came and found her.  She was about 9 weeks old and very frightened.  A friend knew that we were looking for a new pet as one of ours had just died.  She was the perfect pet.  She was highly intelligent, very protective, and could catch frisbees better than anyone in the neighborhood.  She loved to ride in the golfcart, which I firmly believe she felt was hers and that I was just the chauffer.  It has been a few years since she died of Cancer but there are times I still feel as if any minute she will walk
into the room and put her head on my knee and look up at me with those trusting, beautiful brown eyes.

                                     ARTEMIS BEAR

"Doogie" was so very small at birth that the doctor thought it best to put him to sleep.  His own mother pushed him aside from the rest of the litter.  I saw in him a true spirit, an angel.  He thrived and became a 175 lb gentle giant.  Loving and watchful and playful.  He died in my arms and is now with the creator.

Rest in peace my dearest friend.  For now you are one with the wind, and your spirit shall dance forever among the clouds.  Each time I see the wind playing in the grass and among the leaves, I will know you are near me.

Doogie you will always be remembered and loved

                      TANYA'S NAUTI TASHA GIRL

                               May 6, 1988  to  January 7, 1999

Tasha, was a loving Rottweiler companion and mother of Artemis Bear.  She loved life and against the odds, she battled Cancer twice and won.

On Thursday, the 7th, she laid down in the living room with me beside her when she drew her last breath. it was a beautiful death, very peaceful. I swear I saw her spirit step from this world into the next.

Now you can chase butterflies with doogie and lil george.

Tasha, you will live in my memories and my heart,

                                   LIL GEORGE

                                          1980   to   4-23-98

Today was one of the saddest days in my life.  I had to part with you after eighteen years together and let you cross the rainbow bridge.  I know that you are happy on the other side and probably playing with your friend Doogie who went there a year ago.

My hope and prayer is that when it is my turn to cross over, that you will be waiting for me and as happy to see me as I will be to see you.  Until that time my beloved George, rest in peace, free from pain and any sort of troublesome thoughts.

I love you and will always miss you,

                                               RC

On October 7, 1997 heaven gained a new little angel.  My kitty RC was murdered by a Pitt Bull.

RC was a happy, playful and loving cat.  He could be brave and fearless but mostly he was a cuddly, loveable best friend and my "baby".

Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and long to feel your soft fur and hear your gentle purring.  You always will be my special and beloved RC.  I will always love you and miss you.  Someday we will meet again as I cross over the "Rainbow Bridge".

                                      FRISKIE

Friskie was a very special cat.  She was my friend and companion while I was growing up.  She never had any kittens of her own but she was mother to several of our other family cats and to the family dog.  She even taught the dog how to wash her paws like a cat does.  She was a good hunter and always liked to bring home "presents" to the family.  Her favorite thing to bring home to us was a field mouse.

As she got older, she slept a lot but was always there to greet me and to hang out in my room with me.  When she died, I lost not only a pet but my friend.  There will never be another like my Friskie.

My wolf, my friend, my "child", my life.  All is dark now.  All is empty.  Until we meet again at the Bridge of no Goodbyes.

                                         VODKA

In 1991, while watching a Humane Society tv show, I saw ten month old Vodka and knew I had to have her.  She was an Irish Wolfhound mix dog with beautiful long gray fur and a sweeping tail.  Her fur felt like you were running your fingers through soft feathers.

She was never formally trained as an assistance dog but she seemed to read my thoughts and anticipate my needs.  She would pick up things I dropped and let me lean against her for support and many other things that assistance dogs are trained to do.  She always gave 100% of herself at all times.  She was an extremely loving and giving friend.

I have known you before, in other lifetimes,
may we be together in future ones
